Frankenstein Closing Night Party Invite and Details
This is my invitation. It is copyrighted and professionally produced. No use of this invitation without prior permission is permitted.

I am having 200 posh copies of this invite professionally produced. They will be going to staff at the National Theatre, the Home Office, the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Swivel Theatre Company, the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, All Souls, Salsateca, the Metropolitan Walkers, Brunel University, Lambeth Libraries, the Undershaw Preservation Trust, dancy_dreamer, and gozadreams.

THE PARTY IS ON!

The party is open and inclusive - everyone is welcome at the party. You don't need an invite to come to the party - you just turn up!

But I am working in partnership with the National to ensure that we give the best possible service as we can to party attendees. This means that the National and I need to have some idea re numbers coming so that we can cater for you appropriately.

Please RSVP in the comments:

1) Say how many of you are coming

2) Say if you are interested in a Backstage tour - The National have said that they are prepared to lay on extra tours if there is a demand for them

3) Say if you want food before and after the production - The National are planning to only operate their cafes and food facilities for a bank holiday. But again, they have said that they will keep the cafes etc open longer and staff up accordingly if they know that there is a demand for food after the production.

I want as many new people to come to the National as possible to see how awesome it is.

The deadline for responses is 6pm Thursday 21 April.

I will collate replies over the Easter weekend and forward them to the National by Tuesday 26 April. I am meeting the National on Wednesday 27 April to finalise all the arrangements and the details.

So come on down and join the party! Let's put Born Slippy by Underworld on the turntable and get this party started!

Why is Benedict only being recognised as the Creature and not both of his roles in the play? It comes off as a bit insulting to Ben's Victor to phrase it the way you did, especially since he's invited to the party.

Thank you for saying something.

I agree, and sidelining JLM is extremely insulting, unbelievably so.

Thank you for your support in my absence - I was at Church and then at the National, watching Benedict as Creature in Frankenstein - see my answer below - I think that pretty much answers everyone.

Thank you for sticking up for me in my absence - I appreciate it.

No comment on how the invitation is worded as it is clear it is from BC fans - however, 'Mr' Hytner? He is a knight of the realm and therefore his formal title is 'Sir Nicholas'.

Enjoy your party!
Rakshita (Raks) Patelrakspatel on April 10th, 2011 05:58 pm (UTC)
I will answer all comments in one:

1) Danny Boyle the Director and Nick Dear the playwright have both said on numerous occasions that this production is about the Creature told from the Creature's point of view hence the focus on the Creature

2) Benedict is good as Victor yes - he is always good. But it is his performance as the Creature that is outstanding. I have seen dancers use their bodies in this way with maximum physicality - but a straight actor no. Benedict as Creature is what is outstanding about the production - Benedict has said this himself - do you want to argue with Benedict?

3) Jonny. Is a private person. I saw him at the stage door today and got his autograph for some friends. He wants to do his job and then be left alone to go on his way. He does not want a party. Also, I cannot host a party for Jonny. I do not know his work - only Trainspotting. So how can I dare to host him a party when I am not a fan of his? It would look stupid and I for one do not want to look like a fool.

4) The National. Loved the invite and the wording. The only minor point they raised was Mr Hytner is Sir Nicholas. Then we realised Mr Hytner calls himself Nick Hytner on his own website - he never uses his Sir. They thought it looked professional and the wording was spot on. The red on the invite matches the red of the robe. I have shelled out my own money to get the artwork done and have proper invites printed - I went out of my way to commission a high quality company so that the invites would be good enough for Nick Hytner, the National staff, Benedict, Danny and Jonny.

5) I have been working hard with the National to deliver a quality party. It would be nice if people appreciated my and the National's efforts to deliver a quality party instead of being negative and sniping.

6) I was at the stage door today and whilst I did not have a posh invite - they arrive on Wednesday - I had an A4 colour printout for Mr Cumberbatch. I told him about the party and he smiled and said "that is so kind - thank you so so much". He was touched. I also gave him a copy of Mark Gatiss's speech to the Sherlock Holmes Society of London's Annual Dinner. I watched him - I was one of the first in line and he held onto all the material I had given him right the way through all the autographs. He went into the stage door and did not bin then. He put them in his satchel, put the satchel over his arm, and walked off with the Mark Gatiss speech and the Invite.

I repeat - he said "That is so kind - thank you so much". He was touched.

I trust that answers everyone's comments.

If Jonny fans want to throw him a party - feel free! - I can't throw Jonny a party - I am not a fan of his and I do not know his work.

Now please can we get back to RSVPs.

Some of your points are fair enough, and I do think it's a nice idea celebrating the end of the play, but as for the Benedict vs Jonny thing...

I don't think it matters that you're not a huge fan of him, or that you're not familiar with his work. I appreciate that you're a fan of Benedict and want to hold a party in his honour, which is fair enough. It's just that if you're hosting the party at the National Theatre and sending out invitations to all the cast and crew, it seems a bit insulting to only focus on one actor. He's an important actor, obviously, but he's certainly not the only actor involved, and it seems slightly insulting to sideline everyone else, when a play like Frankenstein is such a huge production, with so many people involved.

I don't think it's very tactful, that's all. I appreciate the sentiment behind it, and I hope the party's a success. I'm not trying to start an argument with you, I'm just pointing out why I (and perhaps a few other people) think it could have been handled a bit better.

So the National and Mr Cumberbatch are happy with the invitation - both the way it looks and the wording - it is professional and high quality.

They are the only people I care about.

I would also be interested to know if the people criticising the wording have ever done any event management themselves? I have run major events for senior civil servants and politicians eg Ministers of State and Secretaries of State. I do it all the time. What experience do the critics of my wording and invite actually have? I would be very interested to know!

While you feel comfortable throwing around all the big and important things you've been involved with in real life, I'm not planning on revealing anything about my real life. I've had to deal with internet stalkers before.

I'll stick with my online persona only.

Since we're playing the game of who's genitals are bigger, I'll say that a fansite that I run was mentioned by Jonathan Ross at the Baftas a few years back while introducing the actor. It was televised worldwide. It happened because I respected the actor.

As to your points above, thank you for explaining them in detail. I still think it's not appropriate wording and disrespectful to the actors, but I still wish you luck with the event.

Can we get back to RSVPs please - I think I have more than adequately answered everyone.

Plenty of Benedict fans are coming to the party - that is good enough for me.

At the end of the day, I am only holding the party because it is the National and I want to say a thank you to them for the 20 years of pleasure they have given me.

That is why I have dedicated the invite to Nick Hytner.

As I said, everyone is welcome to the party. But we need to know numbers. I have answered as well as I am able - I can't say anymore. RSVPs now please.

I'm just going to respond to the RSVP and say that I'm coming with Annie! This party is a huge reason why I'm even coming to London and to watch Frankenstein live and has made me so many friends, that I've been practically excited over it for almost 3 months now, ever since you've announced it, and so, yes, I'm definitely coming! :D
Rakshita (Raks) Patelrakspatel on April 11th, 2011 12:28 am (UTC)
Yes!

Chiiyo is coming from Singapore!

Theanniemal is coming from Sweden!

Badapplebettie is coming from the US!

PJ - one of the most talented artists is coming from London!

Rakspatel is coming from Lambeth!

Home Office Security are coming!

Tops mini cabs Balham are coming!

The Lighthouse chippie from Tooting Bec are coming!

My Christian friend from All Souls is coming!

And most important of all - my mum and dad are coming! They are coming to the National for the FIRST time in 20 years - they are coming to see Danny's production - they are coming to support Nick Hytner - they are coming to support me!

NT staff I have spoken to are excited about the party and are coming!

Bring it on! Born Slippy here we come! I have the Frankenstein soundtrack - I bought it today - lets get the music on - lets get the party started!

Kim: sherlockbadapplebettie on April 11th, 2011 01:45 am (UTC)
Sarah and I will be there. No to the backstage tour, but as I've said before, only because I'd rather socialize with other fans and we can do the tour later in the week if the desire strikes us. And I'm sure we'll be eating at some point, and as Annie said, it might as well be at the National.
Rakshita (Raks) Patelrakspatel on April 11th, 2011 05:55 am (UTC)
Wahay - the Underworld soundtrack is playing - everyone is coming - let's get it on - let's get the party started.

Forget a 12 hour party - the party has been running at the National even since Frankenstein opened.

The atmosphere there is electric when the show is on. There is such a buzz. Such anticipation. People cannot wait to see the show.

In 20 years of going to the National, I have never seen so much excitement and buzz amongst the punters. The whole place is alive.

Well done Nick Hytner and Danny Boyle!
onebluestockingonebluestocking on April 11th, 2011 01:47 am (UTC)
It sounds like a great party! I wish I weren't so far away! As for the invitation, I thought it was well-designed and did not find the wording objectionable at all. It states clearly that the party is hosted by Benedict's fans, so it makes sense that he is the focus. For all we know Jonny's fans might be throwing their own closing day party, and I wouldn't see anything wrong with that either. If the event were put on by the National Theatre itself, or Danny Boyle, then the invitation should be impartial but it's clear from the wording that this is not the case, so I doubt anyone's feelings will be hurt even if they ever saw this invitation.
Rakshita (Raks) Patelrakspatel on April 11th, 2011 05:52 am (UTC)
Thank you so much for saying what you said. You are the voice of reason. Thank you for your support. What you have said is bang on the money!

I wish you could come!

PM me your address - I want to send you a posh invite even though you aren't coming as you like the look and feel and the wording.
